Empire Period Sideboard (inventory # FF-24) Despite some modifications in this piece's history, it
is in surprisingly good condition. The crotch grain mahogany is showcased
very well on the face and splash of this piece. Note the banded framing
on the doors and even on the central block of the splash. The 3/4
columns that flank either side of the cupboard doors are capped by a simply
carved acanthus leaf, wrapped in more burled mahogany and end with some
awesome pawfeet with their wave crest intact. The interior of the
cupboard shows a cut back original shelf mid-level. The left door
closes with a brass finger slide top and bottom. The right door has
a key to work the lock and is faced with a solid brass strip along it's
edge. The single drawer is mounted with two glass and brass
knobs- probably a later addition, but certainly not new. The drawer
interior is divided into several compartments and probably held a desk
unit at one time. All that is left is the framing. A solid
single-board top is crowned by a very interesting splash with two outboard
pilasters and a central projected block- all capped. The cut out
pattern adds to the style. Think outside the box with
this piece. Certainly a good size for holding a TV and all the components
below.
